Browns symbolize earthiness, and can represent credibility and stability, hearth, home and the earth. It’s usually, but not always, associated with masculine qualities. Brown is a warm neutral color that has been shown to stimulate the appetite. It is found extensively in nature in both living and non-living materials.

 

Browns range through dark rich coffee tones through warm russets and amber to creamy beige, Beige is chameleon-like, able to take on either the warm or cool tones that it associates with.

Lighter shades of browns, like ivories and beiges, help project an air of softness and cleanliness, much like white, but adds a touch of warmth and richness. Think of ivory or lace. In some cultures, beige can symbolize piety and simplicity.

Reddish browns bring to mind autumn and harvests, and therefore abundance and growth. Beiges, ivory and tans suggest casual neatness and cool sophistication. Vibrant coppery hues suggest positive professional growth. Deep hued coffee browns lend themselves to rich and robust sophistication.

 

Use dark browns for creating an air of richness and sophistication. beige and tans to achieve a sense of soothing and calmness. Very dark browns can be used in place of blacks, adding its richness and warmth to an otherwise cool color palette.

Browns have undergone a new acceptance, being seen as rich and giving an air of panache and sophistication. It’s being used in more upscale environments and is able to lend itself to images of rich, robust and exotic ambience. It’s also very much in use to promote natural and organic products. Greens and browns together lend themselves well to organic and recycling and earth-friendly products and services,

Lighter hues lend themselves to a relaxed tone of understated elegance; use them with pale shades of blues and greens to achieve a soft yet earthy feel. Use them as backgrounds to make other colors appear richer, brighter and more appealing and intense. Small amounts of beige, cream or ivory can be used to separate to dark colors to enhance them both.
